Filmmakers and producers Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed a third entry in the Chris Hemsworth-led “Extraction” film franchise is moving forward.
Out promoting their upcoming directorial effort “The Electric State” at New York Comic Con, the pair touched upon the Netflix action film series which they produce.
“Thor” star Hemsworth starred in 2020’s “Extraction” as Australian black ops mercenary Tyler Rake. The film received mixed reviews but became the most-watched original film in Netflix’s history. A sequel was greenlit and was released in June 2023 to better reviews.
Joe Russo writes the films as well and was asked about its current status by Collider, says:
“We’re in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. We’re hoping to go into production on it next year. It’s definitely filming next year. I’m just being cagey because it’s more fun.”
The second film also saw the introduction of Idris Elba’s mysterious character who is working for an unseen boss. The Russos were asked if the third film might crack that mystery to which Joe Russo responded:
“Yes, we know who that character is. It was built that way. If you like that relationship between Idris and Chris [Hemsworth], you’re gonna enjoy Extraction 3 .”
If the project shoots next year, that means a 2026 release is likely – continuing the three-year gap between films of this franchise. Meanwhile, the Russo brothers’ “The Electric State” will be released via Netflix in March.
